The milestone recognition places Greece's longest-running philanthropic international dance event under the formal patronage of tango's country of origin.
Thessaloniki Tango Party (TTP), Greece's only purely philanthropic international dance event, announces that it has received official aegis from the Embassy of Uruguay in Greece for its 7th consecutive edition, taking place August 26-31, 2026, across multiple landmark venues in Thessaloniki.
The recognition by the Embassy of Uruguay marks the first time the festival has been placed under the formal patronage of a country that shares with Argentina the birthright of tango as a living cultural tradition. Uruguay and Argentina jointly hold UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status for tango, recognised since 2009.
The 2026 edition of TTP operates under a constellation of institutional partners that now includes the Embassy of the Argentine Republic in Greece, the Embassy of Uruguay in Greece, the Municipality of Thessaloniki, and the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Greece. The event is organized by the nonprofit association ΣΥΖΩΗ, with all proceeds directed exclusively to the association. Attendance is donation-based; open-air events are free and open to the public. No revenue is generated, no profit is taken. The event exists solely as a philanthropic cultural act.
This year's programme spans six days and features many dances, at venues including Aretsou Beach in Kalamaria, the Byzantine Museum of Culture, and the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.
"Receiving the official aegis of Uruguay alongside that of Argentina gives the event its fullest possible institutional grounding in the source culture of tango," said Pavlos Mavromatis, Artistic Director of TTP. "It is a recognition we have worked toward, and one that carries genuine meaning for every dancer, teacher, and musician who participates."
Thessaloniki Tango Party has operated continuously since 2019, establishing itself as the only international dance event of its kind in northern Greece combining international scope, dual diplomatic recognition, and a fully philanthropic, open-access model.
