What happens when a dance and music festival becomes more than a celebration and turns into a space for exploration, learning and human connection?
This August, Thessaloniki Tango Party welcomes Mavromatis Institute | Mi in a unique collaboration that brings two experiential seminars, Gestaltango® and Parousia, to the 7th edition of the festival, taking place from 26 to 31 August 2026.
Mavromatis Institute | Mi is a Canadian nonprofit research and education organization dedicated to interdisciplinary research, education and the exploration of human experience. Its collaboration with Thessaloniki Tango Party brings an educational and experiential dimension to a festival already built around movement, music, culture and human connection.
Although its name comes from Tango, Thessaloniki Tango Party has evolved into a broader international celebration of dance and music, bringing together Tango, Greek folk dance, Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba, Zumba and other forms of dance and musical expression. Participants arrive from Greece and around the world, transforming Thessaloniki into a meeting point for different cultures, traditions and communities.
Gestaltango®, created by Pavlos Mavromatis, explores the relationship between Gestalt principles, embodied awareness, tango, communication and human connection. Rather than approaching these concepts only intellectually, the seminar invites participants to explore them through direct experience and movement.
Parousia takes a different but complementary path, focusing on presence, awareness and the experience of being fully engaged with oneself, others and the environment. Together, the two seminars invite participants to explore a simple but powerful question: what can we discover about ourselves when we stop merely thinking about experience and actually experience it?
This collaboration reflects a shared belief between Mavromatis Institute | Mi and Thessaloniki Tango Party that education does not always have to happen inside a classroom. Sometimes it happens through movement, music, interaction, observation and direct human experience.
That makes these seminars particularly fitting for a festival where people from different countries and backgrounds meet through dance.
The collaboration also carries a philanthropic dimension. Thessaloniki Tango Party is an international, exclusively philanthropic festival whose activities support SYZOI, connecting cultural exchange and celebration with social contribution.
For Mavromatis Institute | Mi, the collaboration offers an opportunity to bring its research and educational ideas into a living cultural environment. For Thessaloniki Tango Party, it adds another dimension to the festival: a place where people can not only dance, listen and celebrate, but also pause, explore and learn through experience.
Because perhaps the most interesting question a festival can ask is not “What will you learn?”
It is:
“What will you experience?”
